Gender Equality Duty
The gender equality duty is the biggest change in sex equality
legislation in thirty years, since the introduction of the Sex
Discrimination Act (1977). The GED is a legal and enforceable duty
contained within the Equality Act (2006). The GED requires public
authorities to promote equality between women and men, and eliminate
unlawful sex discrimination and harassment. The duty will affect all
aspects of policy making, service provision, and employment practices
to ensure that they reflect the diverse needs of women and men. The
gender duty does not mean treating everybody the same. It requires
public authorities to demonstrate that they treat women and men fairly
to achieve equality.
