General Election 2010 - Respect Briefing

Background - Why be concerned?  Why bother doing anything?

The next UK general election has to take place on or before 3rd June 2010.  The date could be called any day now and once it is called, the electoral roll is closed.  At the time of writing, the election had not been officially called but was widely tipped to take place on 6th May 2010.

Below is information which we think it is important that our members and supporters are aware of. This is a key time for raising the awareness of your potential member of parliament and for some of you, the future government ministers. You can use this period to make sure that they are aware of their own party's strategy on domestic violence or violence against women as applicable, to let them know how your work fits into this. You can also let them know that their views on how to respond to domestic violence may affect how you and your colleagues, friends and family will vote.

Please do use these downloads as they are intended to assist you and your programmes in your lobbying efforts.

If you receive any replies, whether by email, letter or other means, do let us know (email below). This will help us to coordinate our strategy nationally and to make the most of new opportunities after the election to support the development of perpetrator programmes and other interventions across the country to end domestic violence and violence against women.

What Respect is doing and will do

  1. Providing this information to members and advice if needed
  2. Providing updated information on any relevant policy briefings throughout the election period
  3. Providing information about new ministers when government announced
  4. Brief new MPs and ministers on the role and value of perpetrator programmes when parliament reconvenes after the election
