Research Roundtable 1 - Evaluating the Effectiveness of Domestic Violence Perpetrator Programmes
Roundtable event: ‘Evaluating the effectiveness of domestic violence perpetrator programmes’
Respect held a roundtable on ‘Evaluating the effectiveness of domestic violence perpetrator programmes’ on May 11th 2007
The aims of this event were to bring together researchers,
practitioners and policy makers, to review what evaluation has been
done or is currently under way and to discuss what else is needed. We
also aimed to discuss opportunities presented by the Respect
accreditation system.
It was a very productive and interesting day that was very well
attended by some of the key people in this field of work and research.
Being able to demonstrate the effectiveness of Domestic Violence
Prevention Programmes (DVPP), in bringing about a reduction or
cessation in the violence and abusive behaviour of the men who attend
these programmes is crucial, especially in today’s competitive funding
environment.
Research on the effects of perpetrator programmes on the safety of
women and children is limited. We have learnt a great deal from
evaluations of services in Scotland (Dobash et al, 2000) and in England
(Burton et al, 1998). The only longitudinal large scale multi site
research in the world is that carried out in the US with four
programmes, by Edward Gondolf (Gondolf, 2002).
As a result of the roundtable, Respect are now working with two key
funders, the LankellyChase Foundation and the Northern Rock Foundation
to commission a longitudinal piece of research on the effects of UK
programmes.
