Research Roundtable 3 - Black Minority Ethnic (BME) Domestic Violence Perpetrators

Black Minority Ethnic (BME) Domestic Violence Perpetrators

Respect believes that BME perpetrators needs are not being adequately addressed, and that ultimately impacts on the safety of their ex/partners and children. Therefore we decided to hold a Research Roundtable on this issue, in order to bring together key academics from the UK and USA, and UK practitioners to discuss the issues and implications, and to find a possible way forward to address the gap in UK research and practice. Respect were considering the following questions; How should mainstream perpetrator programmes ensure that their services meet the needs of BME perpetrators? And what research is needed to inform practice developments in the UK?

We were fortunate to have Professor Oliver Williams from the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community (IDVAAC) in Minnesota, USA to come over and share his vast experience as a practitioner and academic. Oliver’s life’s work has been focused on BME domestic violence perpetrators.

We also invited Poonam Joshi from Amnesty International and Dr Aisha Gill from Imkaan, to give an overview of issues surrounding Black Minority Ethnic (BME) women in the UK suffering domestic violence.
