Who calls the Respect Phoneline?

The majority of people who call our service are men in straight relationships. These are men who realise that they are abusive and they are looking for help to stop.

We also get calls from women who suffer domestic violence and are looking for help on behalf of their partner. We welcome those calls as an opportunity to encourage women to access specialist support for themselves but also to explain to them what help might be available for their partner.

The Respect Phoneline accepts calls from women who are abusive towards their male partners and from abusive men and women in same-sex relationships.

Finally, we get calls from frontline workers and professional people who get in touch directly or indirectly with domestic violence perpetrators. We offer them information about programmes and we advise on best practice.

What can I expect when I ring the Respect Phoneline?

You can call us if you want to discuss your use of violence or abuse; or if you are not sure about certain behaviours and you need to talk to someone about them.

We can also give you information about specialist programmes designed to help abusive men change their abusive behaviours.

We don’t provide ongoing telephone support or counselling. For more information you can click on Men: Are you abusive towards your partner?
