What is the Respect Male Victims’ Standard?

To be safe and effective, services supporting male victims of domestic abuse must prioritise the victims’ safety, wellbeing and freedom in their work. The Respect Male Victims’ Standard is a quality assurance framework that helps to assess whether this is the case. Where services are delivering on the principles set out in the Standard, male victims can be confident they are providing a safe and effective service.

The Standard assesses services in a number of areas including governance and management; intervention delivery; diversity and access; and multiagency work. All Respect-accredited services working with male victims are held to this Standard to ensure that only safe, effective work with male victims of domestic abuse takes place.

All accredited services are required to apply for a new accreditation assessment every 3 years, and a service can only be considered “accredited” when it has passed its accreditation assessment.

What do services say about accreditation?

“Our Respect Accreditation for the work that we do with male victims is a personal and organisational reward and something that I am so proud we have achieved.

“The accreditation highlights the work we do in supporting male victims and reinforces that we, as an organisation, recognise that this can happen to anyone, regardless of gender or sexuality.

“I would like to thank Respect for supporting us through this process. Becoming the first organisation to achieve this for work with male victims in the UK again reinforces the work we do as an organisation to support the diverse range of clients that come to us. I would highly recommend other services to reach and achieve these standards.”

- Calan DVS (the first service for male victims to gain Respect accreditation)
