Welsh organisation Calan DVS has become the first to achieve the Respect Male Victims’ Standard, Respect’s accreditation for work with male victims of domestic abuse. Their service, The Compass Programme, supports male victims to share their experiences as part of a safe and supportive group programme.

This strand of work brings together Respect’s considerable experience of supporting male victims on the Men’s Advice Line, with its accreditation expertise and infrastructure, to develop quality assurance in an area that has been largely unregulated and overlooked: support for male victims.

Whilst there are many quality assurance frameworks for services working with female victims and survivors of abuse, there are currently only two standards aimed specifically at organisations supporting male victims. Respect’s Male Victims’ Standard was the first to be published in 2019. It was created to fill that gap, learning from the Standards produced for female victims and survivors, whilst being mindful of the specific challenges faced by male victims.

In a recent report, commissioners, funders and service providers talked about the benefits of the Respect Standard for work with perpetrators, noting that it raises standards and unlocks funding for services. Respect hopes that by offering accreditation in this new area, the same can be achieved for work with male victims, building confidence and encouraging commissioning for services delivering high quality support.

Ippo Panteloudakis, Head of Services at Respect, said,

“Last year more male victims than ever before sought support via Respect’s Men’s Advice Line. We support them and signpost them to further help, but they also need high quality, local support services to give them the help they need to start a life free from violence. By accrediting services delivering high quality and safe work, we can give male victims the confidence to access support”

Michelle Whelan, CEO of Calan DVS, said,

"Men experiencing abuse usually find it difficult to access support for a number of reasons.  These include the fear of not being believed or a lack of trust in the services on offer. As an organisation which actively supports male victims through a range of services including our 8-week recovery and resilience programme (Compass), we are delighted to be the first organisation in the UK to have achieved this standard.  This achievement is down to the commitment and passion of our teams in ensuring we deliver inclusive services for all victims of domestic abuse."

Calan DVS y gwasanaeth cyntaf ar gyfer dynion sy’n ddioddefwyr i gael ei achredu gan Respect

Y sefydliad Cymreig Calan yw’r cyntaf i ennill y Safon Dynion sy’n Ddioddefwyr gan Respect, sef achrediad Respect am waith gyda dynion sy’n dioddef cam-drin domestig. Mae eu gwasanaeth, Y Rhaglen Cwmpawd, yn helpu dynion sy’n ddioddefwyr i rannu eu profiadau fel rhan o raglen grŵp diogel a chefnogol.

Mae’r elfen waith hon yn dwyn ynghyd brofiad sylweddol Respect o gefnogi dynion sy’n ddioddefwyr ar y llinell gyngor i ddynion, gyda’i achrediad, ei arbenigedd a’i seilwaith, i ddatblygu sicrwydd ansawdd mewn maes sydd wedi’i ddiystyru ac na chaiff ei reoleiddio i raddau helaeth: cymorth i ddynion sy’n ddioddefwyr.

Er bod nifer o fframweithiau sicrhau ansawdd i’w cael ar gyfer gwasanaethau sy’n gweithio â merched sy’n ddioddefwyr a goroeswyr camdriniaeth, dim ond 2 safon ar hyn o bryd sydd wedi’u hanelu’n benodol at sefydliadau sy’n cefnogi dynion sy’n ddioddefwyr. Safon Dynion sy’n Ddioddefwyr Respect oedd y gyntaf i gael ei chyhoeddi yn 2019. Fe’i crëwyd i lenwi’r bwlch hwnnw, gan ddysgu oddi wrth y Safonau a luniwyd ar gyfer merched sy’n ddioddefwyr ac yn oroeswyr, a gan roi ystyriaeth i’r heriau penodol a wyneba dynion sy’n ddioddefwyr.

Mewn adroddiad diweddar, cyfeiriodd comisiynwyr, cyllidwyr a darparwyr gwasanaethau at fanteision Safon Respect ar gyfer gwaith â drwgweithredwyr, gan ddweud ei fod yn codi safonau ar gyfer gwaith â drwgweithredwyr ac yn datgloi cyllid ar gyfer gwasanaethau. Mae Respect yn gobeithio, drwy gynnig achrediad yn y maes newydd hwn, y gellir cyflawni’r un peth gyda gwaith â dynion sy’n ddioddefwyr, gan fagu hyder ac annog comisiynau ar gyfer gwasanaethau sy’n darparu cymorth o ansawdd uchel.

Meddai Ippo Panteloudakis, Pennaeth Gwasanaethau yn Respect

“Y llynedd fe wnaeth mwy o ddynion nag erioed geisio cymorth drwy Linell Gyngor Respect i Ddynion. Rydym yn eu helpu a’u cyfeirio at help pellach, ond mae arnynt hefyd angen gwasanaethau cymorth lleol, o ansawdd uchel i roi iddynt yr help y mae arnynt ei angen i ddechrau bywyd heb drais. Drwy achredu gwasanaethau sy’n darparu gwaith diogel ac o ansawdd uchel, gallwn roi i ddynion sy’n ddioddefwyr yr hyder i ofyn am gymorth”

Meddai Michelle Whelan, CEO o Calan DVS

"Mae dynion sy'n dioddef o gamdrin yn aml yn ei ffeindio hi'n anodd i ofyn am gymorth am nifer o resymau. Mae rhai o'r resymau yn cynnwys pryder ni fydd pobl yn eu credu, neu diffyg ymddiriedaeth yn y gwasanaethau sydd ar gael. Fel sefydliad sy'n frwd i gefnogi dioddefwyr dynol trwy nifer o wasanaethau yn cynnwys ein rhaglen adferiad a gwydnwch sy'n para am 8 wythnos (Compass), rydym yn falch i fod y sefydliad cyntaf ym Mhrydain i gyflawni hyn. Mae'r gyrhaeddiad hyn o ganlyniad i'r ymroddiad a brwdfrydedd ein timau i sicrhau darpariad cynhwysol o wasanaethau i'r holl ddioddefwyr o gamdriniaeth domestig."
